Atlantic Region Tournament Is PSAC Heavy

The Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) is well represented in the NCAA D2 Atlantic Region Tournament this year, with 5 of the 7 teams in the tournament coming from that conference. But that doesn’t mean, in this wild season we have had this year, that they are a lock to send a team to Grand Prairie.

The Atlantic Region tournament begins Thursday in Jamestown, NY hosted by top-seeded Mercyhurst.

Mercyhurst, which had been the #1 team in the country until they lost in the final game of the PSAC tournament, will lead a field of teams that have not only been to these regionals before in recent years, but also to the College World Series (CWS).

West Chester is the only team in this year’s Atlantic Region Tournament to have won a D2 College World Series.

The automatic qualifiers for the South Region are Winston Salem State, Shepherd, and Seton Hill.

The NCAA granted at-large berths to Mercyhurst, West ChesterMillersville, and Shippensburg.

One team that thought they might receive an at-large bid from the NCAA, and some believe deservedly so, was Lock Haven.

Lock Haven (32-18, 16-12 PSAC) finished ahead of Millersville in the PSAC East division but they went 1-2 in the PSAC Tournament to end their season.

D2BaseballNews.com Prediction:

Normally, a prediction here would be easy. Mercyhurst has the numbers on offense and defense nationally to just run through the Atlantic Region tournament with ease. But this is not a normal year, as the Lakers found out in the PSAC Championship game. All year long, as soon as we hitched our wagon to teams that were dominating, they would stumble. In this tournament, there are teams that can swing it like Shepherd, or with incredible team speed like Winston-Salem. But no one has the pitching staff that Mercyhurst has (the depth) and that bats to swing it. As the Griffins of Seton Hill showed, the Lakers are mortal. But considering our 2 team in the country has shown itself to be very good, for almost all of the season…we are sticking with Mercyhurst to be packing its bags next week for Texas.
